Rebond Foam vs Memory Foam: Which Material for Which Product

Published 2026-10-11. Practical guide for factory buyers sourcing PU foam scrap and rebonded foam.

Rebonded PU foam and memory visco foam show up in the same buying conversations, but they do different work. Rebond foam is a bonded material built from recycled PU foam chips. It can be specified as a load-bearing core. It is used for domestic mattress cores, farming mattress cores, furniture padding and modular autoparts. Memory visco foam is a slow-rebound comfort material. Fungbillion supplies memory visco scrap. This guide explains which material suits which product, and where a single build needs both.

Two materials, two jobs

Start with the function of the part you are buying foam for. If the part must hold shape under repeated load — a mattress core, a sofa seat block, a modular automotive component — you are specifying a structural foam. If the part must conform to a body, soften contact pressure, or add a slow-rebound feel, you are specifying a comfort foam.

Treating them as alternatives usually leads to a specification that either overbuilds the comfort layer or underbuilds the core.

What rebonded PU foam is

Rebonded PU foam is made with recycled PU foam, and the finished material is 100% recyclable. Chips are bonded under pressure into blocks, then cut to shape. Density ranges from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3, which gives buyers a wide band to work with: lower densities for furniture padding, higher densities for load-bearing cores.

  • Replacement of virgin foam in applications where a recycled core performs the same structural role.
  • Furniture padding — seat blocks, backs and armrest fills that must keep their shape.
  • Domestic mattress and farming mattress cores.
  • Modular autoparts where a shaped, dense foam block is required.

Shape cutting is supported, so rebond can be delivered as blocks or cut to the profile your assembly line needs. Chip mixes vary by grade, which is normal for a recycled input.

What memory visco foam does

Memory visco foam is the slow-rebound family: it deforms under pressure and returns gradually rather than springing back immediately. That behavior is what makes it useful in comfort layers, not in structural cores. A visco layer is not the material you specify for a part whose job is to carry load across years of use.

Fungbillion supplies memory visco scrap. We do not quote visco density or performance figures here, because the right figure depends on your end product and your own process. Test your blend against your target feel before you lock a specification.

Where rebond foam fits

Specify rebond when the foam has a mechanical job to do.

  • Mattress cores: rebond carries body weight, and a separate comfort layer sits on top. See mattress applications.
  • Furniture: seat cushions in high-use furniture need density and compression resistance that comfort foams alone do not provide. See furniture applications.
  • Automotive: modular autoparts use shaped rebond blocks.

If your current specification calls for virgin foam in a core position, rebond is the direct comparison to make.

Where memory visco fits

Specify visco where the product's value is in how it feels against the body.

  • Comfort layers above a structural core.
  • Filling where slow recovery is part of the product description.
  • Blends where shredded visco is mixed with other foam chips to tune recovery speed.

Visco is a poor choice for a part that must hold a fixed shape under continuous load, and an unnecessary cost for a part that only needs bulk.

Using both in one product

Many mattress and seating builds use both materials in layers rather than choosing one. The core is rebond at the density your load case requires; the comfort layer is visco or a visco blend. The interface between layers matters as much as the layers themselves: a thick, low-density comfort layer over a soft core may not hold up, while a thin comfort layer over a dense core will feel firm regardless of the visco content.

Shredded foam and visco scrap can be blended in different ratios to move the feel without changing the core. Ask us about the chip mix you are buying, not just the material name.

Grades, skin content and what you are actually buying

Foam scrap is not a single product. Grade AA is supplied at around 5% skin or as a 0-skin version, with density of 20-30kg/m3; Grade A comes in 5% skin and 15% skin versions; Grade B is around 15% skin. Colors are black, white or mixed. The scrap range also includes memory visco scrap, shredded foam, PU binder, 10mm thick foam carpet underlay, filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap at 50-60 density, crushed fabric bra foam scrap and old used foam.

Skin content affects how the material bonds and how the finished block looks. Higher skin content is not automatically a fault — it depends on your process and end use. Review our explanation of foam scrap grades before you fix a grade in your purchase order, and check the full foam scrap range.

Format, bales and container planning

Rebond and scrap arrive differently, and that changes your receiving plan. Scrap is compressed: bales run 200-300kg, at a listed density of 15-30kg/m3. A 40ft container loads 18000-22000kg, and one 40HQ loads 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales. Alibaba-listed supply ability of 5000 Ton/Tons per Month, with shipment from Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

If you buy cut rebond blocks rather than bales, plan for volume, not compression — cut blocks do not compress the way loose scrap does. Confirm with your supplier which format you are quoting so your container math matches the material.

What to tell us when you inquire

Send the end product, the function of the foam in that product (core, comfort layer or filling), the density you need for rebond, the grade and skin content for scrap, and the color. Add your target bale or block format and the port you ship to. With those points we can quote the right material instead of a material name.
