Mattress Foam Buying Guide for Manufacturers
Published 2026-10-11. Practical guide for factory buyers sourcing PU foam scrap and rebonded foam.
Mattress manufacturers buying foam have two decisions: which foam material goes into the finished mattress, and which foam feedstock goes into the plant. Rebonded PU foam is a finished material. Foam scrap is a feedstock. This guide covers material selection — density, grade, skin content, shape cutting, and shipment format. It does not give mattress layer recipes or thickness standards. For the industry overview, see the mattress applications page. Use this page to specify what you want to buy.
Start with the end use, not the sample
Ask one question first: will the foam be used as a finished mattress material, or will it be processed further? Rebonded PU foam is designed for replacement of virgin foam, furniture padding, farming mattress, domestic mattress, and modular autoparts. If your end use is a domestic mattress, a farming mattress, or a direct replacement for virgin foam, rebonded PU foam is the material to specify. It is made with recycled PU foam and is 100% recyclable. That matters when your buyers ask about recycled content.
If you are buying scrap, you are buying feedstock, not a finished mattress foam. The buying specs change. You need to think about grade, skin content, color, and bale format instead of only density and shape. See Rebonded PU Foam for the finished material and PU Foam Scrap for the feedstock side.
Where rebonded PU foam fits in a mattress program
Rebonded PU foam density runs from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3. Shape cutting is supported. That means you can specify cut shapes, not only blocks or bales. Do not assume one density covers every mattress program. State the target density on your inquiry.
For a deeper density discussion, use the rebond foam density guide. It explains how density is used in specification. This page stays on material selection.
Density is a range, not a single number
When you buy rebonded PU foam, the low and high ends of the density range are not interchangeable. They are two ends of the same product range. The right point in that range depends on your end use, your cutting process, and what the mattress needs to do. For purchasing managers, the practical rule is simple: put the target density in writing, and ask for the density of the actual batch you will receive. Do not buy on a general description alone.
Grade thinking when you buy scrap as feedstock
If you buy foam scrap as feedstock, grade is the first specification to confirm. The grades are:
- Grade AA: around 5% skin or 0-skin versions, density 20-30kg/m3, with quality listed as 'super good' and price as 'also expensive'.
- Grade A: 5% skin and 15% skin versions.
- Grade B: around 15% skin.
Color is a separate spec: black, white, or mixed. Grade AA is not automatically right for every line. Grade A and Grade B cover different skin levels. Check what your process can handle before you choose a grade. For a fuller explanation of skin content and grade names, read foam scrap grades explained.
Other scrap streams to keep on your radar
Beyond AA, A, and B, other listed scrap streams include memory visco (memory foam) scrap, shredded foam, PU binder, 10mm thick foam carpet underlay, filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap (50-60 density), crushed fabric bra foam scrap, and old used foam. Not every stream is a mattress input. Use them only where they fit your process and your finished product requirements. If you need shredded material rather than bales, specify shredded foam in your inquiry.
Bale, container, and port planning
For purchasing managers, logistics often decides the order. The Alibaba-listed supply ability of 5000 Ton/Tons per Month is a platform figure. Ports are Shenzhen or Guangzhou, China. Scrap bale specs include density 15-30kg/m3 and 200-300kg per bale. A 40ft container loads 18000-22000kg. One 40HQ loads 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales. Use these figures when you plan container utilization and inland transport.
Payment methods are T/T, L/C, D/P D/A, MoneyGram, Credit Card, Western Union, and Cash. Main markets are the Mid East, South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Domestic Market. The business type is Manufacturer, Trading Company, Guangdong, China.
Platform signals and what they do not mean
Alibaba shows several badges on the shop and product pages. 'Onsite Check' is an Alibaba badge, not a product certification. '13 YRS', 'Response Time ≤9h', and 'on-time delivery ≥100%' are Alibaba platform badges, not product specifications or service commitments. These signals can help you screen suppliers, but they do not replace your own material specs.
