Rebond Foam for Packaging: When It Fits and When It Doesn't

Published 2026-10-11. Practical guide for factory buyers sourcing PU foam scrap and rebonded foam.

Packaging buyers often ask whether rebond foam and foam scrap can replace engineered packaging foams. The short answer: sometimes. Rebond foam is made with recycled PU foam and is 100% recyclable. It can be cut to shape. But packaging is not the same as furniture padding, mattress cores, or carpet underlay. This guide explains where rebond foam fits in packaging, where it does not, and what to specify when you ask us for a quote.

What Rebond Foam and Foam Scrap Are

Rebonded PU foam is a recycled foam product. It is made with recycled PU foam and is 100% recyclable. Density ranges from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3. Shape cutting is supported. Intended uses include replacement of virgin foam, furniture padding, farming mattress, domestic mattress, and modular autoparts.

Foam scrap is a separate product family. Grades include Grade AA (around 5% skin or 0-skin versions, density 20-30kg/m3), Grade A (5% skin and 15% skin versions), and Grade B (around 15% skin). Colors are black, white, or mixed. Other scrap types include memory visco (memory foam) scrap, shredded foam, PU binder, 10mm thick foam carpet underlay, filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap (50-60 density), crushed fabric bra foam scrap, and old used foam.

For packaging, the most relevant items are usually rebonded blocks or sheets and shredded foam. See rebonded PU foam and shredded foam for product details.

Where Rebond Foam Fits in Packaging

For packaging, rebond foam and foam scrap can be considered for several non-critical roles:

  • Void fill and loose fill: Shredded foam can fill irregular gaps inside cartons or crates.
  • Padding layers: Foam sheets can separate or cushion parts during transport.
  • Corner and edge protection: Shape-cut rebond foam can be used as corner blocks or edge protectors.
  • Pallet padding: Foam layers can sit between a pallet and a product, or between stacked items.
  • Interleaving: Thin foam sheets can separate metal, wood, or plastic parts.
  • Furniture packaging: Because furniture padding is an intended use, rebond foam can play a padding role in furniture packaging, but the packaging spec still needs to be defined by the buyer.

These are general packaging roles. They do not mean rebond foam is a drop-in replacement for every engineered packaging foam. The buyer must match the material to the product weight, fragility, transport route, and handling conditions.

What Packaging Buyers Check Before Choosing Rebond Foam

Packaging buyers and technical buyers typically check the following when evaluating rebond foam or foam scrap:

  • Density: Rebonded PU foam is available from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3. Foam scrap grades have their own density ranges, for example Grade AA at 20-30kg/m3. Density is a key variable for how much material is in a given volume.
  • Shape and cut: Rebonded PU foam supports shape cutting. You can specify blocks, sheets, or profiles. This matters for inserts, trays, and end caps.
  • Skin content: Scrap grades differ in skin content. Skin content affects appearance and consistency.
  • Color: Scrap is available in black, white, or mixed. Color may matter if the foam is visible in the package.
  • Bale size and loading: Foam scrap is often supplied in 200-300kg bales. A 40ft container loads 18000-22000kg. One 40HQ loads 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales. These figures affect freight planning and unloading.

When Rebond Foam Does NOT Fit Packaging

This is the honest boundary. The intended uses for rebonded PU foam are replacement of virgin foam, furniture padding, farming mattress, domestic mattress, and modular autoparts. Do not treat rebond foam as a proven packaging material for every job.

Rebond foam is usually not the right choice when:

  • You need published packaging test data. This guide does not provide drop-test, vibration, or compression-set data. If your packaging spec depends on formal test data, rebond foam should be validated by your own trials before use.
  • The application requires tightly controlled cleanliness. Foam scrap is recycled material. It is not presented here as a cleanroom or food-contact material.
  • You need static control or electrical properties. Fungbillion does not list anti-static or conductive properties for this product.
  • You need a structural load-bearing material. Rebond foam is a foam, not a structural board. It can compress under load.
  • You need highly consistent density and appearance. Scrap grades have skin percentages and mixed colors. If the package must look identical every time, scrap-based foam may be difficult to control.
  • You need thin, high-tolerance sheets. Rebonded PU foam supports shape cutting, but it is not a precision sheet material.
  • You need a direct replacement for engineered foams. EPE, EVA, and pour-in-place PU foams are designed for specific packaging performance. Rebond foam is not a drop-in substitute without testing.

If your packaging job falls into any of these categories, ask us whether a different material is a better fit before you commit to rebond foam.

How to Specify Rebond Foam for Packaging

To get a useful quote, give us a clear specification. For rebonded PU foam, state the density you want, the cut shape or dimensions, and the quantity. For foam scrap, state the grade (AA, A, or B), skin preference, color, and bale size. If you are using shredded foam for void fill, say so and describe the void size and fill method.

Also state the port you prefer. Fungbillion can ship from Shenzhen or Guangzhou, China. This helps align the order with your freight plan.

What to tell us when you inquire

When you contact us, include your packaging application, the product being packed, the density or grade you need, the cut shape or dimensions, the quantity, the color or skin preference, and your preferred port. For rebonded PU foam, confirm the density. For foam scrap, confirm the grade (AA, A, or B) and bale size.
