Foam Chips and Shredded Foam: Forms, Uses and Buying Notes
Published 2026-10-11. Practical guide for factory buyers sourcing PU foam scrap and rebonded foam.
Foam chips, crushed foam and foam trim are trade terms for recycled PU foam feedstock. Shredded foam is a supplied product and a common feedstock form. None of these materials are finished products; they are input materials for rebonded foam and other industrial uses. For purchasing managers, the key question is what the material contains, how it is processed, how it is baled, and whether it matches your process. This guide explains the common forms, how they feed rebond production, and what to check before you buy.
What the Main Foam Feedstock Terms Mean
In the foam trade, the same material can carry different names depending on the supplier, region and processing step.
- Shredded foam: PU foam scrap reduced by a shredder. Pieces are irregular in size and shape. It is often the starting point for rebonded foam, because it can be mixed with binder and compressed.
- Foam chips: A general term for smaller foam pieces. Some suppliers use it interchangeably with shredded foam. Others use it for smaller, more consistent pieces.
- Crushed foam: Foam reduced further by crushing or grinding. The result is usually finer than standard shredded foam.
- Foam trim and offcuts: Cut waste from slab production, shape cutting or mattress and furniture fabrication. Trim may be clean and single-color, or mixed with skin, fabric or other material.
These terms are not standardized. When you request a quotation, describe the physical form you need, not only the name.
Forms of Foam Feedstock You Will See
We supply shredded foam and crushed fabric bra foam scrap. The list below covers common foam scrap and related categories in the market, so you can compare grades and forms before you ask us about availability.
- Grade AA: Around 5% skin or 0-skin versions, density 20-30kg/m3.
- Grade A: 5% skin and 15% skin versions.
- Grade B: Around 15% skin.
- Colors: Black, white or mixed.
- Memory visco scrap: Memory foam scrap for buyers who need visco content.
- Shredded foam: Foam scrap reduced to pieces for rebonding or other processing.
- PU binder: A separate input used to bond foam pieces in rebond production.
- Other scrap types: Filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap (50-60 density), crushed fabric bra foam scrap and old used foam.
Each form has different cleanliness, skin content and processing requirements. The grade name alone does not answer every question. You still need to confirm the mix, color and bale condition. More detail is in our guide to foam scrap grades explained. See also shredded foam.
How Shredded Foam and Foam Chips Feed Rebond Production
Rebonded PU foam is made with recycled PU foam and is 100% recyclable. It is produced in densities from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3, and shape cutting is supported. Rebond foam is typically made by cleaning, mixing, and coating foam scrap with PU binder, compressing the coated pieces into a block or bale, curing, and cutting into sheets or shapes.
Because the feedstock is recycled, consistency matters. Too much skin, fabric, dust or moisture can affect how the binder wets the foam pieces and how the finished block cures. A clean, well-sorted shredded foam stream helps produce more uniform rebonded foam. For a step-by-step explanation, see how rebonded foam is made. The finished material is described on our rebonded PU foam page.
What Buyers Check Before Ordering Foam Feedstock
Purchasing managers and technical buyers usually review the same basic points before placing an order.
- Cleanliness: Check for metal, stone, wood, paper, fabric, dirt and moisture. Contamination can damage equipment or create defects in the finished foam.
- Material mix: Confirm whether the load is pure PU foam, memory visco scrap, mixed foam, or a specific scrap type such as Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap or filter foam scrap.
- Skin content: Confirm the declared skin percentage for the grade. Skin content affects density, binder consumption and finished foam properties.
- Color: Black, white or mixed. Color may not affect performance in every application, but it can matter for visible or light-colored finished products.
- Density: Grade AA foam scrap is listed at 20-30kg/m3. Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap is listed at 50-60 density. Rebonded PU foam is produced from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3.
- Baling: Standard bales are 200-300kg. A 40ft container loads 18000-22000kg. One 40HQ loads 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales.
Request samples or a clear description of the current lot before confirming a bulk order. Foam scrap is a recycled material, so lot-to-lot variation is normal. Define the acceptable range in your specification.
Shredded Foam vs. Foam Chips vs. Crushed Foam
Shredded foam generally has larger, irregular pieces. Foam chips are usually smaller. Crushed foam is finer still. Trim and offcuts may be unshredded pieces straight from a cutting line. These differences matter for handling and processing.
For rebond production, piece size affects binder coating and compression. Smaller pieces can pack more tightly, but they may create more dust. Larger shredded pieces can leave voids if the mix is not controlled. For other applications, the required form may be different. A 10mm thick foam carpet underlay is a finished product. If you buy loose foam for further processing, specify the form, not just the grade.
Common End Uses and Sourcing Notes
Rebonded PU foam is designed for replacement of virgin foam, furniture padding, farming mattress, domestic mattress and modular autoparts. Foam scrap is also sold as feedstock to manufacturers who shred, crush or blend the material themselves.
