Importing Foam Scrap: Bales, Container Loads and Ports
Published 2026-10-11. Practical guide for factory buyers sourcing PU foam scrap and rebonded foam.
Importing foam scrap is a volume business. Foam scrap is light relative to its volume, so freight per ton matters. Bale weight and container loading determine your landed cost more than almost anything else. This guide explains the practical side of importing baled foam scrap: how bales are packed, what a 40ft container and a 40HQ can load, which Chinese ports are used, how payment usually works, and what you as the buyer must arrange. It uses general buying knowledge where logistics and customs are concerned; it does not replace your own forwarder or customs broker.
What Foam Scrap Grades and Formats You Are Importing
We are Dongguan Fungbillion Furniture Material Co., Ltd., based in ChaoLang Industrial Zone, Chashan Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong, China. We are a Manufacturer and Trading Company in Guangdong, China. Our foam scrap and recycled foam range includes several grades and formats. PU foam scrap is the main category. Grade AA is supplied as around 5% skin or 0-skin versions, with density of 20-30kg/m3. It is the higher-grade option. Grade A comes in 5% skin and 15% skin versions. Grade B is around 15% skin. Colors include black, white and mixed.
Other formats include memory visco (memory foam) scrap, shredded foam, PU binder, 10mm thick foam carpet underlay, filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap (50-60 density), crushed fabric bra foam scrap, and old used foam. If you need help matching a grade to your end use, see the foam scrap grades explained guide.
Rebonded PU foam is a separate product from loose scrap. It is made with recycled PU foam and is 100% recyclable. Rebonded PU foam density ranges from 50kg/m3 to 300kg/m3. Shape cutting is supported. It is designed for replacement of virgin foam, furniture padding, farming mattress, domestic mattress, and modular autoparts. You can read more at rebonded PU foam.
Bales, Density and Packaging
Foam scrap is normally compressed into bales for export. The bale weight range is 200-300kg per bale. The density range is 15-30kg/m3. Those two figures matter because they set the relationship between volume and weight. A bale of low-density foam takes more space for the same weight. A bale of higher-density foam takes less space for the same weight. When you plan a shipment, do not look only at the number of bales. Look at total weight, bale dimensions and container payload.
If you need a cleaner feed, ask about AA-grade compression bales. Compression saves shipping space, but it also means the bales must be handled with proper equipment. Your receiving warehouse should have a forklift or similar handling capability. If you are importing loose shredded foam, memory visco scrap or other formats, confirm how the material is packed before booking. The packing method affects container utilization and unloading time.
For grade selection, remember that skin percentage, density and color are part of the specification. If your process can tolerate more skin, a different grade may fit. If your process needs a cleaner feed, ask us about Grade AA.
Container Loads: 40ft and 40HQ
For foam scrap exports from China, two container types are common in planning: the 40ft container and the 40HQ. A 40ft container loads 18,000-22,000kg. One 40HQ loads 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales. The 40HQ gives more internal volume, which can be useful for lighter bales. The 40ft may be used when weight is the limiting factor. Neither figure is a promise for every order. Actual loading depends on bale weight, bale size, compression, grade and the container weight limit.
As a buyer, confirm the container type with us before production or loading. Ask for the planned bale weight and the estimated total weight. Then check the payload limit for the route, not just the container. In many countries, road weight limits are lower than the container's maximum payload. If the container is loaded close to its weight limit but the truck cannot legally carry that weight on the final leg, you have a problem. Your freight forwarder can advise on local road limits and any port or terminal restrictions.
Container loading also affects unloading. A 40HQ loaded with 20-22 tons of AA-grade compression bales is a dense load. Make sure your receiving site can move and store the bales safely. If you are comparing 40ft and 40HQ options, calculate cost per ton, not cost per container alone. The heavier load may lower cost per ton, but only if your warehouse and transport can handle it.
Ports: Shenzhen or Guangzhou
We ship foam scrap from ports Shenzhen or Guangzhou, China. The port choice can affect sailing schedule, carrier options and inland transport from Dongguan. In general, your freight forwarder should compare both ports for your destination and cargo type.
Port selection is not only about the sailing. It also affects documentation, terminal handling and trucking. Shenzhen and Guangzhou have different terminal arrangements and different carrier services. A port that is convenient for us may not be the cheapest or fastest for your destination. That is why you should share the destination port, preferred sailing schedule and any carrier requirements with us and your forwarder early.
If you are new to importing from China, the basic export documents are usually arranged by us or our freight forwarder. You normally arrange the import side: customs broker, import declaration, duties and taxes, and any destination inspections. This is general buying knowledge, not a Fungbillion-specific service promise. Your customs broker is the right person to confirm what your country requires for foam scrap, recycled foam or baled PU foam.
Payment Methods for Foam Scrap Imports
We accept T/T, L/C, D/P D/A, MoneyGram, Credit Card, Western Union and Cash. Payment terms are agreed per order. For large container loads, buyers often discuss T/T or L/C because these methods can be structured around shipment documents. For smaller or sample orders, other methods may be discussed. The key point is to match the payment method to the order value and the risk level.
Before you send payment, confirm the invoice details, beneficiary name, order specification and shipping terms in writing. If you use an L/C, check that the required documents match what we can provide. If you use T/T, agree on the deposit and balance schedule before loading. If you use D/P or D/A, understand that these are documentary collection methods and the bank release process follows the documents, not the goods. Your bank can explain the risks and costs. We do not control bank fees, currency conversion or transfer times.
Payment method should not be separated from quality planning. If you are buying Grade AA, Grade A, Grade B, memory visco scrap, shredded foam, PU binder, filter foam scrap, Dali skin foam, Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap or old used foam, the specification should be written into the order. That makes payment and inspection easier for both sides.
Supply Ability and Market Regions
We have an Alibaba-listed supply ability of 5000 Ton/Tons per Month. That figure is useful for planning, but it does not mean every grade is available in every quantity at all times. Foam scrap supply changes with collection, sorting and compression schedules. If you need a regular monthly volume, share your target grade, density, skin percentage, color and bale size so we can confirm what can be planned.
The main markets are the Mid East, South America, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Domestic Market. Different markets often prefer different grades. Some buyers want AA-grade compression bales for a cleaner feed. Some want Grade A or Grade B for cost-sensitive applications. Some need shredded foam, memory visco scrap or PU binder for specific processes. Tell us the end use, and the grade discussion becomes more concrete.
For sourcing strategy, read the foam scrap sourcing guide. It explains how to compare grades, bale weights and container loads without relying on a single number.
Due Diligence: Platform Badges, Samples and Specifications
On Alibaba, we show badges including Onsite Check, 13 YRS, Response Time ≤9h and on-time delivery ≥100%. These are Alibaba platform badges, not product specifications or service commitments.
For your own due diligence, focus on the specification. Ask us for the grade, skin percentage, density, color and packing method. For Grade AA, confirm whether it is 0-skin or a low-skin version and confirm the stated density range. For Grade A, confirm the skin percentage. For Grade B, confirm the skin percentage. For rebonded PU foam, confirm density and whether shape cutting is required. For Hi-Poly shoe foam scrap, confirm density. These details reduce misunderstandings later.
Samples can help, but they are not the whole shipment. A sample shows one small piece. A container load shows the full range of a production run. If your process is sensitive to color, skin or density, agree on how the material will be checked before loading. You can also review common questions at FAQ.
